Volunteer Award Fall 2011

Terry Pope

For the past two years, rain or shine, Terry Pope has been making his way to the downtown CWJC location every Monday and Thursday evening to tutor. Always with a weathered messenger bag full of prepared lessons in tow, Terry has faithfully served many of our math students week in and week out. As if showing up to tutor wasn’t enough of an impact, Terry has also taken it upon himself to research and prepare additional math materials for the concepts that are most difficult to grasp by our women. That is precisely why CWJC of Middle TN recently awarded Terry the Mary Francis Turner Volunteer Award at our recent December graduation.

Serving as a pilot for United Airlines before retirement, Terry learned what it meant to be dependable and hard working. Carrying those traits with him, along with his approachable and patient spirit, many women request Terry every week to be their tutor. Offering his support not only to the students, but to staff as well, Terry spent a weekend organizing a cross reference sheet to help connect the topics in CWJC’s text books to our other supplemental materials.

As almost always the first one to arrive and the last volunteer to leave, Terry has made his imprint on the downtown Nashville satellite and in the lives of the students served there. He’s the embodiment of a servant who is willing to help shine God’s light into the dark and hopeless places many of our student’s experience.

Thank you, Terry Pope, for your service. We greatly appreciate you!
